Martyrs of Uhud Cemetery
The burial area associated with those martyred at Uhud.
Why this place matters
The cemetery is associated with the martyrs of the Battle of Uhud, including Hamzah ibn Abd al-Muttalib رضي الله عنه. It remains one of the most emotionally significant Seerah sites in Madinah.
The martyrs of Uhud
The Muslims who fell at the Battle of Uhud were buried near the battlefield. The Prophet ﷺ placed two martyrs in each grave, putting first the one who knew more of the Qur’an, said “I will be a witness for these on the Day of Resurrection”, and ordered that they be buried in their blood, without washing (Sahih al-Bukhari 1343).
Among them is the Prophet’s uncle Hamzah ibn ‘Abd al-Muttalib, whose martyrdom at Uhud is narrated by Wahshi himself (Sahih al-Bukhari 4072).
Visiting today
The cemetery is enclosed, and visitors greet the martyrs and make du‘a for them from outside the enclosure. It is usually visited together with Mount Uhud and Jabal ‘Aynayn.
